Dr. Liu’s research focuses on virus–host interactions involving emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens, including HIV, Ebola virus, influenza A virus, Zika virus, and SARS-CoV-2. His program emphasizes viral entry mechanisms, viral evolution, and host immune responses, with the goal of defining fundamental principles that inform antiviral and vaccine development. Dr. Liu has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals such as Cell, Science, Cell Host & Microbe, Cancer Cell, The New England Journal of Medicine, Science Translational Medicine, and Science Immunology. He serves as an Editor for the Journal of Virology and has held editorial roles with PNAS, mBio, and PLOS Pathogens. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology in 2018 and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2020.
