About
Dr. Elsayed M. Abdelwhab is the Head of the Avian Virus Laboratory at the Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI), Germany. He obtained his Ph.D. from Freie Universität Berlin in 2011 and has been awarded fellowships from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). His research is supported by the European Union, national funding agencies, and industry partners. He leads a multidisciplinary team studying zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential, applying One Health concepts to understand interspecies transmission, molecular mechanisms of virulence and host adaptation at the virus–host interface, vaccine development and efficacy, and molecular epidemiology, with a strong focus on veterinary virology. Dr. Abdelwhab is actively involved in academic teaching, lecturing in veterinary virology at Justus Liebig University Giessen and the University of Greifswald. He has supervised dozens of PhD and Master’s students. He has served as Head of the Training and Career Development Committee of the World Society for Virology (WSV). He is Editor-in-Chief of npj Viruses, an official partner journal of the WSV, serves as an Associate Editor for several other virology journals, and has handled over 200 manuscripts as an editor. He is also a reviewer for more than 300 scientific articles. In addition, he serves as an expert and consultant for the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), contributing to risk assessments of emerging zoonotic viruses.
