Professor Juan E. Echevarría currently holds the position of Scientific Researcher at the Institute of Health Carlos III, within the national Centre of Microbiology (CNM). Additionally, he is the coordinator of the system for the rapid laboratory response against public health alerts at the CNM. He also leads a research group at the Centro de Investigación Biológica en Red de Epidemiología y Salud Pública (CIBERESP).
He completed his PhD on viral Hepatitis B on 1993 and has kept working on Public health Viroloy since then. His main research line are the search and characterization of bat viruses relevant for Public Health, with special focus on lyssaviruses. He leads is the national reference laboratory for rabies in Spain. He is also actively involved on research on the viruses of the MMR vaccine: mumps, measles and rubella.
He is member of the council of the Spanish Society of Virology (SEV) since 2017 and has been recently elected (September 2024) President of the SEV
