Susana López is Professor of Virology at the Institute of Biotechnology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Dr. López completed her bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees in Basic Biomedical Research at UNAM. Subsequently, she spent two years as a special student at the California Institute of Technology, USA, in the laboratory of Jim Strauss. Her research area is molecular virology, with a particular interest in the molecular biology of viruses causing infantile gastroenteritis, in which she is interested in learning about virus-host interactions. She has published more than 140 articles in peer reviewed journals and has served as an advisor to more than 40 graduate students.
She has been a reviewer for papers submitted to numerous international journals and served as editor of the Journal of Virology from 2016 until July 2023. She has been a guest professor at the National Institute of Health in Japan, the California Institute of Technology, and the Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA) in France. Among her distinctions, she received the award from the Mexican Academy of Sciences in the Natural Sciences category in 1993, the Carlos J. Finlay award granted by UNESCO in 2001, the TWAS 2008 award in Biology, and in 2012 she received the “For Women in Science 2012” award, granted by L’Oreal-UNESCO. Since March 2021 she is a member of El Colegio Nacional.
