It is with much sadness and great respect for Prof. Günther Keil and the phenomenal accomplishments of his life’s work that we inform you of his passing on February 18, 2020. he Virology Family Worldwide lost a very eminent virologist; Prof. Günther Keil. Prof. Keil, in addition of being an eminent virologist, he was a model of wisdom walking on the land [as mentioned by Prof. Ahmed Sayed Abdel-Moneim]. He touched the life of so many scientists worldwide. He used to give his hand to all people without looking to what it the return benefits him. The late Günther Keil was one of the most eminent virologists in the Friedrich Loeffler Institut (FLI). He was the deputy director of the institute of Molecular biology (Currently is Institute of Molecular Virology and Cell Biology). He also one of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) team group members. He conducted eminent researches on many vector constructions, baculovirus for expression in insect and mammalian systems. He has published more than 100 publications and has invented many patents related to bovine herpes virus-1 vector and also a valuable technique for basic molecular biology. His favorite virus was bovine herpes virus 1, however, he has had his imprints on the African swine fever virus and many others within the aspect of studying virus-host interaction.
